November Performers' Evening

Wednesday, 6 November , 7.30pm Philharmonia Hall, 427 Dominion Rd, Auckland.  Piano accompaniment will be provided by Gemma Lee (for NZDRS members only).  If you would like to play with Gemma, please contact her at  gemmaleepiano@gmail.com  to arrange getting her the music. Non-members are welcome to play an unaccompanied piece. Entry for members is FREE, non-members $10. DOUBLE REED DAY

It’s time to get your application forms in for this year’s fabulous NZDRS Day on Saturday 28 September. There is something for everyone – competitions, master classes, double reed band, a members’ recital and more. Come along for all or part of the day, have fun, make new friends and learn lots of useful tips to improve your playing.   This year we have two light hearted competitions: THE LONG “A”  COMPETITION       Our double reed day starts with the chance to test your powers of endurance. How many seconds can you hold an “A” for? Separate divisions for oboe and bassoon/under 16 years and 16 years and over. Double Reed Day - Double Reed Band Parts

This year the Double Reed Band is going to play  Albion & Albanius .    Albion and Albanius  is an  opera , closely resembling a  French   tragédie en musique , by  Louis Grabu .   The music was written in 1685. Please select and download the part(s) you would like to play.  Please be aware that if the number of players on parts are unbalanced on the day, you may be asked to play a different part - If you download Oboe 1, it would be worth having a look at Oboe 2 as well. Chamber Music Club

This month's chamber music club will be held on Saturday 21 September .  Why not come along and practice your piece for the competition for school students at NZDRS Day (28 September)  and get some input from our tutors? There are cash prizes of $60/$45 and $30 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes and extra prizes too! We would love to have more  bassoonists  coming along. Jan Lorier has generously offered the following incentive: For any existing NZDRS member who brings along a bassoonist who has not been before, she will reward both with chocolate. This first chamber music session will be at member rates for the new person. If the new bassoonist comes to the next chamber music club meeting, with the member who introduced them, AND joins the NZDRS at that second session, each gets one Event movie pass, which she will also sponsor! Membership

Membership is now annual from whenever you sign up e.g. you sign up on 25/8/2013, you will be a member until 25/8/2014.  You will be sent a reminder in the calendar month before your membership expires.  To become a member or renew your membership, please click on Membership.  Fill out the form and remember to click "submit" at the bottom.  Payment details are on the form. 

NZDRS Double Reed Day Chamber Music Competition

...Just one of the activities happening on NZDRS Double Reed Day  28 September 2013 Westlake Girls' High School Who can enter: School students of any level (no uni students).    What to play: Any duet, trio, or quartet under 5 minutes in length. The group must include at least one double reed instrument. (ie, bassoon duet, oboe and piano, etc.) What you can win: Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three groups. Only a group with an NZDRS member is eligible for 1st prize.  Fun prizes will also be given in categories such as: Best Dressed, Most Enthusiastic Performance, Best Teamwork, Best Bows. Our next Performers' Evening will be Wednesday, 4 September at 7:30pm at Philharmonia Hall,  427 Dominion Rd . This is an informal, friendly, fun opportunity to practice performing! Piano accompaniment will be provided by Gemma Lee (for NZDRS members only).  If you would like to play with Gemma, please contact her at  gemmaleepiano@gmail.com  to arrange getting her the music. Non members are welcome to play an unaccompanied piece. Entry for members is FREE, non-members $10. Diana Doherty masterclass

The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in conjunction with the NZ Double Reed Society and KGE Reeds is delighted to present an open free oboe masterclass with Diana Doherty. She is our masterworks soloist in the Strauss Oboe Concerto for the Rite of Spring Concert. Diana Doherty is principal oboist of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and considered one of todays most talented and accomplished instrumentalists. Diana Doherty Masterclass

The legendary Diana Doherty, principal oboist of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, will be in Christchurch at the end of the month.  Oboe master class * from 4-6pm on Thursday 29 August Strauss Oboe Concerto with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra at 7.30pm on Sat 31 August. Next Performers' Evening   Wednesday 3 July   7.30pm  Philharmonia Hall,  427 Dominion Rd,  Auckland.  This is an informal occasion so come along and play something you are working on or a duet.  We are planning to have  a pianist  at this session so if you would like to play and your piece has an accompaniment, please let us know by  Wednesday 26 June  so that we can let her have the music to look at. Student members outing to hear NZSO play the Planets

CONCERT CANCELLED Due to weather conditions in Wellington today, the NZSO have had to cancel this concert.   Yet another reason to join NZDRS if you are not already a member! WHAT: New Zealand Symphony Orchestra plays the Planets by Holst WHEN: 7pm Friday 21 June WHERE: Auckland Town Hall WHO: Student members of NZDRS.  COST: $10.00 HOW: Email us by Friday 14 June if you would like to come along. Carpool with friends or catch the bus into town.
